Thurgood Marshall (http://www.history.com/topics/black-history/thurgood-marshall) The worst home front disaster of World War II occurred on July 17, 1944, at the Port Chicago ammunition base located near San Francisco when two munitions ships blew up while being loaded. In the segregated Navy, only the black sailors were given the dangerous task of loading the volatile explosives, but they weren't given any training. Thurgood Marshall, then a NAACP lawyer, defended 50 black sailors who were court marshaled after refusing to return to the dangerous job. |
